Introducing Universal Speed Rating (USR): The Future of Performance Tracking at SPECTRUM
Beginning January 1st, SPECTRUM Performance will officially implement Universal Speed Rating (USR) as our standardized system to record, rank, and publish athlete performance data.
This marks a major step forward in how we measure, interpret, and communicate athletic performance — providing greater clarity, transparency, and consistency across all athletes, sports, and testing environments.
Why Universal Speed Rating?
In performance training, data is only valuable if it can be understood, compared, and applied. Traditional testing methods often leave coaches and athletes with isolated numbers — sprint times, jump heights, shuttle scores — without context.
USR solves that problem.
Universal Speed Rating is a standardized performance metric that allows speed and movement data to be compared across athletes, positions, age groups, and testing sessions. Instead of looking at raw numbers in isolation, USR places performance into a meaningful framework that highlights where an athlete truly stands.
This allows us to:
- Compare athletes across different testing environments
- Track progress over time with consistency
- Objectively rank performance without bias
- Communicate results in a clear, understandable way
How We Will Use USR at SPECTRUM
USR will become the primary performance score associated with our speed and movement testing protocols. While we will still collect traditional metrics (speed, power, agility, strength, endurance), USR will serve as the summary performance indicator that brings all of that data together.
At SPECTRUM, USR will be used to:
- Record athlete performance data during testing, combines, and assessments
- Rank athletes within their peer group (age, sport, position, level)
- Track development across training blocks, seasons, and years
- Publish performance benchmarks to provide transparency and accountability
This allows athletes and coaches to clearly see improvement trends, identify strengths and weaknesses, and better guide training decisions.
Backlogging Previous Testing & Combine Data
In addition to all future testing, we will be backlogging previous testing events and combines into the USR system.
This means athletes who have tested with us in the past will:
- Have their historical data entered into USR
- Gain a standardized rating for previous performances
- Be able to compare past results with current and future testing
By doing this, we’re creating a long-term performance record rather than isolated testing days. Over time, this data becomes a powerful tool for understanding development, readiness, and durability.
What This Means for Athletes & Teams
For athletes, USR provides:
- Clear benchmarks for progress
- Objective rankings that remove guesswork
- A better way to communicate performance to coaches, recruiters, and organizations
For teams and organizations, USR provides:
- Consistent testing standards
- Comparable data across seasons and rosters
- A reliable system for identifying performance trends and needs
Ultimately, this elevates the conversation from “How fast are you?” to “How do you perform relative to your peers and your potential?”
Testing Opportunities & Group Assessments
As we roll out USR, we are actively working with:
- Youth and club teams
- High school programs
- Collegiate athletes
- Professional and elite-level organizations
If you have a group, team, or organization that would like to test, rank, and record performance data using Universal Speed Rating, we’d love to connect.
Testing sessions can be customized to meet your sport’s specific demands while maintaining the integrity and consistency of the USR system.
Looking Ahead
Adopting Universal Speed Rating aligns with our commitment to data-driven training, transparency, and long-term athlete development. This is not about chasing numbers — it’s about using the right data to make better decisions.
As we continue to evolve our testing, training, and reporting systems, USR will play a central role in how we help athletes move faster, perform better, and sustain success over time.
