Finding Identity Beyond the Game

June 25, 2019
Our June Athlete of the Month is professional soccer player Kayla McCoy. McCoy was drafted to the Houston Dash of the NWSL after an incredible 4 year stint at Duke University. McCoy took a break from school in February to come to Orlando and train at SPECTRUM preparing for the Women’s World Cup, which is now going on. One of McCoy’s goals was to make the Jamaican National team final roster and she did just that as a young forward. The hard work Kayla put in to prepare for the World Cup did not go unnoticed, but unfortunately for McCoy, she tore her ACL in a friendly before the tournament started.
While this was a major disappointment for Kayla and Jamaican, she has faced many prior injuries that have changed her mindset about herself and her sport. In this feature, Kayla opens up about her injuries and how she has found her identity to go beyond the soccer pitch.
